One person is dead after a vehicle was found submerged in a coulee Monday afternoon near the 1400 block of Duchamp Road, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded to the scene around 4 p.m. and suspect only one person was in the vehicle when it ran off the roadway, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Maj. Ginny Higgins said.

Although thunderstorms poured on Acadiana early Monday, Higgins said, the accident was not weather-related — even though the coulee was swollen from the morning storms and weekend showers.

“The road was dry at the time,” Higgins said.

The driver, identified as Craig J. Huval, 55, Broussard, was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
