Authorities Tuesday night were investigating an incident in which an officer fired shots at an SUV driving toward the officer at a high rate of speed, Police Chief K.P. Gibson said.

Gibson said the officer was on foot in the 1100 block of W. 7th St. when he fired shots at the speeding vehicle, which went off into into a ditch near a utility pole.

Other officers had been chasing the SUV, trying to get the driver to stop, Gibson said. He said all injuries are considered non life-threatening. State Police were called to investigate the incident.

Romanian national suspected in ‘cyberscam’ surrenders

A Romanian national wanted for his role in an cyberscam that allegedly robbed $1.4 million from more than 500 Internet shoppers from Louisiana and Mississippi surrendered to authorities last week.

Another man said to be involved in the scheme remains at large.

Gheorghe Olar, 49, of Breaux Bridge, surrendered Oct. 29 at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, where he remains incarcerated, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Corey Britt.

Dorin Munteneau Racu, 31 — also a Romanian national whose last known address is 224 Young Drive in Lafayette — is still wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“We think he’s probably fled the area, but we’re looking for him,” Britt said. “We’re still pursuing all leads.”

Racu is one of 11 people said to be involved in the scheme, through which unknowing shoppers made purchases on fraudulent versions of popular websites like eBay and Craigslist, said Steven Hartmann, spokesman for Attorney General Buddy Caldwell, whose office led the investigation.

Seven Acadiana residents were arrested Oct. 14 in connection with the fraud after two arrests were made in Pearl, Mississippi, on June 11.

The operation extended throughout Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, East Baton Rouge and Lincoln parishes, as well as into Mississippi, but Hartmann said authorities believe the group operates nationwide.
