A fire set by students to a field to clear it for baseball season was spread by winds, burning about five acres Monday before firefighters brought it under control.

Scott Fire Chief Chad Sonnier said Acadiana High School agricultural students were burning the field around 1:30 p.m., but high winds caused the fire to spread “beyond the designated area” toward a nearby neighborhood.

Lafayette, Judice, Milton, Youngsville, Broussard and Carencro firefighters were called into control the fire, which caused no structural damage, Sonnier said in a news release.

Tossed cigarette causes Youngsville house fire

An investigation into a Sunday blaze in Youngsville determined the fire began from a lit cigarette tossed into a trash can outside the home, KATC-TV reported.

Firefighters from about five agencies responded to the fire in the 1200 block of Marteau Road at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Youngsville Fire Chief Blair Rivette said the flames spread quickly into the attic, and about 60 percent of the home is destroyed, including the roof. The three bedrooms and living room received some smoke damage, Rivette said.

Minors cited in alcohol operation at area bars

Three misdemeanor summonses were issued to minors at two Jefferson Street bars Saturday after the Lafayette Police Department conducted an operation targeting underage alcohol possession.

Two underage patrons at NiteTown and one underage patron at Club Prime — all under the age of 21 — were cited, police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

NiteTown is already facing penalties from the state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control after it netted third-offense citations in October in selling alcohol to underage patrons. Commissioner Troy Hebert is expected to decide on that matter this week, ATC attorney Jacqueline Wilson said Monday.
