FRANKLIN — At least one scammer on Friday impersonated a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputy in an attempt to collect credit card information over the telephone from an unsuspecting victim.
The victim received two phone calls, one from someone claiming to represent a debt collection agency and another from someone claiming to be a deputy threatening arrest if the debt was not paid, the Sheriff’s Office said in a Monday news release.
The victim provided credit card information to the caller who claimed to represent a debt collection agency but became suspicious afterward and contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report the encounters.
A “call from someone claiming to be a member of law enforcement attempting to collect a debt is a scam,” even if the called ID lists the caller as a law enforcement agency, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in the release.
Anyone receiving such calls is urged to hang up and contact local law enforcement to report the incident.
