Evangeline Parish Clerk of Court candidate Joseph “Greg” Tate has been arrested and booked with criminal conspiracy to commit second-degree battery.
Tate, 54, was booked on Friday morning and is being held on a $200,000 bond, according to Evangeline Parish Jail records.
Ville Platte Police Chief Neal Lartigue said Friday that “the matter is still under investigation. We’re trying to wrap it up to get a solid handle on it.”
Lartigue would not explain the reason for the conspiracy charge nor would comment on the intended victim.
“I’m not releasing that. That will harm the case as we go further,” Lartigue said.
He added that more information about the arrest would not be released Friday and no other arrests associated with the alleged crime were expected Friday.
Tate captured 16.4 percent or 1,868 votes in the Oct. 22 race for clerk of court. The results placed him fourth out of five candidates vying for the seat.
Candidates Randall “Randy” Deshotel and Ben Soileau made the run-off.
