FRANKLIN — The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 21-year-old man in a fatal shooting early Monday in Bayou Vista.

Charles Douglas Chandler II, 100 block of Sun Road, Bayou Vista, was booked on one count of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Wade Blackburn, also of Bayou Vista, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found Blackburn unresponsive when arriving to a report of shots fired about 12:45 a.m. Monday on Columbus Avenue, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Chandler was developed as a suspect based on witness statements, and detectives found evidence believed to be related to the homicide, including a gun, in a search of Chandlers’s home, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that the search also yielded marijuana, counterfeit money, prescription pills and drug paraphernalia.

In addition to the murder charge, Chandler was booked on counts of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, monetary instrument abuse and possession of Fioricet without a prescription, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

He was being held in the parish jail without bail.
