NEW IBERIA — A 57-year-old New Iberia man was shot multiple times in the chest at his home Tuesday afternoon by an unknown man, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

The victim was identified as Robert James Butler Sr., Iberia Parish Coroner Carl M. Ditch said.

The shooting occurred about 12:50 p.m. in the 1200 block of Angie Street, according to an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office news release.

A motive had not been established in the killing, said Capt. Ryan Turner, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim used a wheelchair, Turner said.

Deputies conducted door-to-door searches for the suspect, described as a black man in his late 20s, wearing a red baseball cap and red T-shirt, the release said.

The man was seen leaving the victim’s home around the time of the shooting, the release said.

Turner said detectives were still talking to witnesses late Tuesday.

Sheriff Louis Ackal did not return a call to his cellphone seeking comment Tuesday, but he was quoted by The Daily Iberian as saying the victim was shot six times.

Ackal told The Iberian the suspect entered Butler’s home, shouted an obscenity and fired six gunshots at Butler.

Ditch said he could not confirm how many times Butler had been shot.

He did say Butler had been shot in the chest.
