Authorities arrested a second suspect Tuesday in the Thanksgiving Day abduction and shooting injury of a 49-year-old Opelousas woman, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Jared A. Burleigh, 26, of Opelousas, was booked on counts of attempted second-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated kidnapping in connection with the Nov. 27 incident, spokesman Sgt. Clay Higgins said.

Another suspect, Chad E. Sam, 30, also of Opelousas, was booked over the weekend on the same counts, Higgins said.

The victim told police two men abducted her and attacked her in a secluded area outside of Opelousas, then shot her as she escaped, Higgins said. The woman had accepted a ride from the men around 8 a.m. as she walked from her Laurent Street home in “The Hill” neighborhood of Opelousas to a convenience store near Interstate 49, Higgins said.

The woman has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Higgins said.

Police: Abbeville man died in two-car collision

Police have identified the man who died Monday in a fatal two-car collision at Ambassador Caffery Parkway and La Neuville Road as 79-year-old Dewey Wheatcroft, of Abbeville.

The other driver is listed in stable condition at an area hospital, Lafayette Police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said Tuesday in a news release.

Wheatcroft, in a 1998 Mercury Cougar, was turning left onto La Neuville Road from the northbound lane of Ambassador Caffery Parkway when a 2000 Toyota Camry traveling south on the road crashed into him around 2:15 p.m., Mouton said.

Wheatcroft died at the hospital, Mouton said.

Iota woman dies after Tuesday car wreck

A 20-year-old Iota resident died Tuesday in a single-car crash in Acadia Parish, a Louisiana State Police spokesman said.

The crash, on La. 91 north of Iota, occurred as Claire Lejeune was traveling north in a 2000 Toyota Camry just before 11 a.m., Master Trooper Brooks David said in a news release.

As Lejeune traveled northbound, she failed to maintain control of the vehicle and ran off the right side of the highway, David said. Lejeune then overcorrected, crossed both lanes of the highway, ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

Lejeune, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car, David said. Lejeune sustained critical injuries and was transported by Air Med to a hospital where she later died.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, David said. Routine toxicology samples were taken from Lejeune and were submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Cause of house fire not yet determined

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a Tuesday morning house fire in the 300 block of South Pierce Street that happened while the resident wasn’t home, the Fire Department said in a news release.

Emergency crews forced their way into the home around 7:30 a.m. and found a small fire in its attic, Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan said. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, the house sustained minor damage above the back door, where the fire originated, Trahan said.
