A Lafayette inmate awaiting his March trial on a count of aggravated battery is now accused of sending a threatening Christmas card to two witnesses in the case, KATC-TV reported.

Johnny W. Hamilton, 35, of Carencro, was charged Friday with two counts of intimidating witnesses, according to court records.

Hamilton sent the card Dec. 13, and it contained violent threats he intended to carry out once he was released from the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, Assistant District Attorney Daniel Landry III said.

Two witnesses came forward in the battery case, in which Hamilton is accused of attacking a woman with brick on Sept. 4. He’s been held in lieu of a $22,500 bail since he was booked Sept. 10.

Hamilton’s trial on the battery case is set for March 23, and he’s scheduled for arraignment on the intimidation charges the following day.

Breaux Bridge man sentenced in fraud

A Breaux Bridge man was sentenced Monday to six months in prison and six months of home confinement for lying in order to continue receiving disability benefits to which he was not entitled, KATC-TV is reporting.

Mervin J. Noel, 51, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote on one count of making false statements to continue receiving workers’ compensation benefits. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $138,247 restitution to the Social Security Administration and Louisiana Workers Compensation Corporation, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.

Noel, who pleaded guilty on Oct. 7, 2014, began receiving workers’ compensation and Social Security disability benefits after sustaining an injury while working on an offshore oil platform in 1994, according to the plea agreement. In 2007, Noel began operating a lawn care business without informing either the LWCC or SSA that he was employed and earning income.

As a result, he received $20,776 in workers’ compensation benefits and $118,220 in Social Security benefits to which he was not entitled.
