A St. Martinville man was killed over the weekend in a shooting at his Madison Street duplex — with his children and their mother in the house — after a brief struggle with his assailant, officials said.

Casey Alexander, in his mid-20s, was pronounced dead at a hospital, St. Martinville Chief of Police Calder Hebert said Monday.

Hebert said police were called around midnight Saturday, and found Alexander on the floor inside the house.

Alexander’s three small children were unhurt, Hebert said, and their mother suffered a minor wound to one of her legs. The woman, who was not identified, was treated and released from a hospital, he said.

“It’s still a very active investigation,” Hebert said. “… There appeared to be a struggle in the house.”

Hebert said Monday morning there was no suspect, and detectives were gathering names of people Alexander associated with.
