A 1-year-old girl who was improperly restrained died Sunday morning after the pickup she was riding in overturned in St. Landry Parish, State Police said.
The crash happened shortly before 6:30 a.m., when Bendel Williams drove off the right side of La. 182 near Flagstation Road, Master Trooper Brooks David said.
The Dodge Ram Williams was driving struck an embankment and the pickup overturned.
Jamaika Johnson, the 1 year old of Carencro, was riding in the truck’s back seat and was improperly restrained with a shoulder-lap belt, David said. The girl suffered severe injuries and was taken to Opelousas General Hospital, where she later died.
Williams, 24, of Carencro, was wearing a seat belt and was treated for moderate injuries.
A toxicology sample was taken from Williams and will be analyzed at the State Police Crime Lab, David said.
