AG says recording ban OK at police station

An opinion released Wednesday by the state Attorney General’s Office says Police Chief K.P. Gibson has the authority to bar the public from recording audio or video in the police station, KATC-TV reported.

The chief asked for an opinion, which does not carry the weight of a judicial decision, after a Crowley resident complained about the policy banning recording in the lobby and waiting areas of the police station.

Although the AG’s opinion said the policy is legal, it also warns that “under the First Amendment … the Chief should consider whether safety, security or privacy concerns warrant the contemplated restrictions on the public’s right to gather information on government activities.”

The policy is in place to protect victims, witnesses and others who might be at the police station waiting to speak to an officer, Gibson said. He added that the police station has video surveillance throughout the building.

Eunice man accused of starting fire at duplex

A Eunice man accused of starting a fire in his kitchen with a crack pipe and makeshift lighter was booked Wednesday on simple arson, KATC-TV reported.

John K. Belfour, 57, is accused of placing a just-smoked crack pipe and makeshift lighter in a drawer, where the fire started, said Deputy Chief Brant Thompson with the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Belfour left the duplex immediately after putting the paraphernalia into the drawer, Thompson said, and the fire was called in a few minutes later.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and did not affect the adjoining unit in the duplex on South Fifth Street, Thompson said.

Belfour was released Thursday from the St. Landry Parish Jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
