A Lafayette Parish corrections officer has been arrested along with an inmate who is accused of disabling a surveillance camera that was set up as part of an internal investigation of the pair, officials said.

Megan Huval, a 22-year-old sheriff’s deputy, was fired and then jailed on counts of malfeasance in office, obstruction of justice and theft, according to a news release by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Jerrod Brashear, 37, who was already in jail on burglary, theft and drug charges, was rearrested on one count of obstruction of justice, according to the release and jail records.

Sheriff’s Capt. Craig Stansbury said detectives helped Lafayette Parish Correctional Center investigators set up cameras to watch the pair.

On Friday, detectives tried to view recorded footage, but found the cameras had been disabled. Investigators believe Brashear removed the cards necessary to record, and gave them to Huval to destroy, Stansbury said.

“This was done in an attempt to hide the policy violations they were involved in that day,” the release said.

“Obviously they were doing something they didn’t want us to know about,” Stansbury said in an interview Tuesday. Stansbury would not get more specific, citing the ongoing investigation.

Police identify man who died in vehicle fire

Police have identified the man who died last Friday in a vehicle fire as 42-year-old Merlin Colbert, of Lafayette.

The coroner’s report ruled Colbert died from smoke inhalation, police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release Monday.

Police found Colbert’s body in the burned vehicle about 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Bryce Street.

Investigators believe Colbert fell asleep in the backseat of the immobile vehicle after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash, Mouton said. The wrecked vehicle “ignited dry vegetation near the engine,” causing the vehicle to burn and smoke to fill the interior compartment, Mouton said.
