Authorities on Thursday arrested a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s corrections officer on accusations he conspired with an inmate to smuggle contraband into the parish jail.

The Sheriff’s Office fired and arrested O’Sharra Silas, 20, of 401 Ira St. in Jeanerette, after a detective found evidence he made plans with an inmate to bring a package into the facility, according to a news release.

The inmate, 34-year-old Joseph B. James, of Franklin, was booked on conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal facility.

Silas, who was booked on one count each of malfeasance in office and conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal facility, had been released by Friday afternoon.
