An Opelousas police officer was placed on leave after a suspect was shot during a gunfire exchange this week.

Police say 23-year-old Demarcus Jones, 905 Jordan St., fired the first shot during a police pursuit from Kim Drive to Pulford Street, according to Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow. The officer — who has not been identified — fired back, injuring Jones on his left side.

Jones hid under a house in the 500 block of Pulford Street until police removed him, Gallow said. They found a .38-caliber revolver near his hiding spot.

The officer was responding to an emergency complaint about midnight Wednesday that Jones was threatening someone with a firearm.

Jones was transported to the Opelousas General Hospital emergency room, where he was treated, then released to the Opelousas jail.

The officer was not injured and will remain on leave while Louisiana State Police investigate the incident.

Lafayette man, 24, surrenders in Van Buren Drive shooting

Police say a Lafayette man wanted in a shooting that occurred last week on Van Buren Drive surrendered Thursday to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Jhailen Trevon Zeno, 20, is accused of demanding money before shooting a 24-year-old man multiple times on Saturday afternoon. The victim, who was not identified, remains in stable condition at an area hospital.

Police try to find man wanted in drive-by

Crowley’s police chief has asked for the public’s help in finding a New Iberia man who is suspected in a Tuesday night drive-by shooting.

Warrants have been issued for Phillip J. Olivier, of New Iberia, who’s accused of firing multiple shots at a vehicle carrying three people in the 1100 block of Western Avenue, according to Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson.

Police describe Olivier as a black man, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds. Although his last known address is in New Iberia, Gibson said he is known to stay in Crowley and should be considered armed and dangerous.
