An 8-year-old girl from Simmesport died late Saturday afternoon from injuries she suffered in a single-vehicle crash near Moreauville in Avoyelles Parish, State Police said.
Isabella Ducote was pronounced dead at Avoyelles Hospital, where she was taken after the Buick Rainier SUV she was riding in ran off the road and struck a fence on La. 114 around 4:20 p.m. Saturday, said Master Trooper Daniel “Scott” Moreau, a State Police spokesman.
The driver of the SUV, Carmen Romero Moreau, 40, also of Simmesport and who is not related to Trooper Moreau, hit standing water in the road, the State Police spokesman said, which caused her to lose control and hit a fence. Pieces of the fence flew into the vehicle and hit both the driver and passenger.
Carmen Moreau was moderately injured in the crash, Trooper Moreau said, and was taken to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Both Carmen Moreau and Isabella were wearing seat belts.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, State Police said, and the results of routine toxicology tests are pending.
