Authorities late Monday evening were searching for an escaped inmate accused of attempted first-degree murder, KATC-TV reported.

Theobegi Levier was handcuffed when he jumped from a moving vehicle in south Opelousas, police said. He had been apprehended by the City Marshal’s Office in a Saturday night shooting in Eunice.

Eunice Police say they believe Levier shot a man in the neck Saturday during a robbery disguised as a drug deal. Another suspect, who police say was driving Levier during the meeting, has already been arrested.

Anyone with knowledge of Levier’s whereabouts is asked to dial 911 immediately.

Youngsville man killed in Broussard crash

A Youngsville motorcyclist was killed Monday in Broussard after he was hit from behind by an SUV, ejected into the oncoming lane of traffic and run over by a passing pickup truck.

Anthony Gage, 51, died on the scene near the corner of La. 92 and St. Etienne Road around 11:20 a.m., said Broussard Police Chief Brannon Decou.

Gage was waiting to take a left onto St. Etienne Road from La. 92 when the SUV, driven by Megan Malespin, 30, of Lafayette, struck him from behind, causing him to be ejected into the roadway, Decou said in a news release.

M.C. Richardson, a 73-year-old New Iberia man traveling in the pickup truck, was unable to avoid hitting Gage, Decou said. Richardson was uninjured.

Malespin was treated at an area hospital with minor injuries and cited for careless operation and driving under suspension. Malespin was later booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on outstanding warrants, Decou said. Alcohol usage is not suspected, but toxicology results are pending, he added.

Malespin remained in jail Monday evening on counts of issuing worthless checks, careless operation, no proof of insurance in the vehicle and operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
