LAFAYETTE — Officers discovered a man dead from a single gunshot wound inside a vehicle near Simcoe Street at University Avenue on Saturday afternoon, the Police Department reported.

Cpl. Paul Mouton, spokesman for Lafayette police, said the discovery was made just before 4 p.m. while officers were responding to a call about a vehicle crash at the intersection.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was found inside a vehicle that had veered off University Avenue before striking a tree next to a building at the intersection, Mouton said.

The crash occurred after the man had fired several shots at a vehicle being driven by an unidentified woman during a dispute between the two people, Mouton said.

The disturbance began inside a residence on West Willow Street, Mouton said.

The woman fled the home in a vehicle and the man followed after her in a separate vehicle, Mouton said.

While chasing the woman, the man fired at least two shots at the woman’s vehicle, striking it twice, Mouton said.

The woman did not appear to be injured in the shooting, Mouton said.

Mouton could not say whether the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He said both the man and woman were alone in their respective vehicles.

The shooting remains under investigation, Mouton said.
