LAFAYETTE — A man whose body was found in a wooded area near Walmart on the Evangeline Thruway died of an apparent suicide, Lafayette police said Wednesday.

The man was identified as 61-year-old Miles S. Profit, originally of Michigan, according to a news release.

Based on the preliminary report from the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office, detectives advised that no foul play is suspected in Profit’s death, the release said. Profit was last seen checking out of a men’s shelter on Aug. 25, the release said.

Police seek suspect in attempted murder

CROWLEY — A man is wanted on one count of attempted second-degree murder in a Tuesday shooting that left another man in stable but serious condition at a hospital, Crowley police said Wednesday.

Crowley police believe the shooting occurred during a disturbance between Brandon Wilkins and the victim, according to a police news release.

The victim was shot in the abdomen, the release said.

Wilkins is a black man, 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, the release said.

Authorities planning sobriety checkpoint

LAFAYETTE — Authorities are conducting a sobriety checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday within the incorporated limits of Lafayette, a news release says.
