A man was shot and killed by police Thursday after he took his girlfriend hostage in a trailer in rural Evangeline Parish, State Police said.

The situation began about 9:30 a.m. at the Easton Oaks mobile home park on Becky Sue Street after the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report of screaming and gunfire in the trailer, State Police spokesman Brooks David said.

After deputies arrived and got no response from anyone in the trailer, they called State Police, who set up a perimeter around the home by 11 a.m. and evacuated the park, David said.

As SWAT team members began arriving on the scene shortly after, shots were fired from inside the trailer, David said.

“At that time, the female in the residence busted out a window screaming for help — screaming that he was gonna kill her,” David said.

When the man was visible in the window, “a trooper fired one round at the subject, killing him,” David said.

Troopers then entered the trailer and rescued the woman, who was sent to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, David said. He said she was not shot or stabbed.

The identity of the man who was killed had not been released Thursday evening, pending notification of next-of-kin.

Evacuated residents remained at the Pine Prairie fire station Thursday evening as State Police continued their investigation of the scene.
