A 12-year-old Eunice girl died from smoke inhalation in an early Monday morning fire that destroyed her family’s brick home, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Firefighters working to suppress the fire found the body of Cailey Duplechain in her bedroom in the 1500 block of Williams Avenue, the Fire Marshal’s Office said in a news release. A preliminary autopsy report from the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office on Tuesday indicated Duplechain’s cause of death.
Duplechain’s stepfather and 4-month old brother escaped the home without injury but were hospitalized.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire but found remnants of an electric space heater in the home’s living room, where the fire originated, according to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
No working smoke alarms were present in the home. A neighbor reported the fire around 5:30 a.m. after seeing flames coming from the home.
The investigation remains ongoing.
