Two people in a car that was being pursued by St. Landry law enforcement officers died in a fiery crash late Thursday, State Police said.

The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. when the 2015 Dodge Dart traveling north on U.S. 167 near Belle Ridge Road failed to negotiate a curve and "struck a tree, a utility pole, and a building causing the vehicle to burst into flames," according to Master Trooper Brooks David, a spokesman for State Police Troop I.

The vehicle was being pursued at the time by Opelousas police and St. Landry sheriff's deputies for driving the wrong way on a one way road, David said in a news release.

"The two occupants of the vehicle were trapped in the fire and later pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office," the release states.

David said they are seeking to identify the two people who died in the crash and standard toxicology tests will be conducted and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation, he said.
