State Police Sunday identified the man killed in a hit-and-run wreck, and arrested the other driver, who left the scene.

Gerald Minnick, 22, Abbeville, was killed in the wreck Saturday on La. 88 near New Horizons Driver in Iberia Parish, Master Trooper Brooks David said Sunday in a news release.

Troopers arrested Virgil Bryant III, 24, New Iberia, hours after the start of the investigation.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Minnick, in a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was headed east on La. 88 around 6 p.m. Saturday.

He crossed the westbound lane and struck a silver BMW that was parked on the shoulder of the road.

After the crash, the Ford truck continued to travel east, driving off of the road and across a ditch. The pickup crashed into a utility pole and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, David said.

Minnick was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office.

The silver BMW left the scene after the crash. About six hours into the investigation, troopers found an unoccupied silver 1999 BMW in a trailer park, not far from the scene of the crash.

Bryant admitted his involvement in the crash when troopers questioned him, David said.

Troopers booked Bryant into the Iberia Parish Jail on counts of hit-and-run driving and no insurance.

The investigation continues, David said.
