Officers with police dogs on Friday helped locate a Vermilion Parish inmate who escaped from custody for about three hours while working an outdoor garden detail, according to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities located Carl Robert Striggow, 26, of 10010 La. 82 in Abbeville, in a field about a mile north of the jail, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Striggow, who’s been held in lieu of a $50,000 bail since his Sept. 10 arrest on simple burglary, now faces at least one additional count of simple escape.

Sheriff Mike Couvillon said the inmate could face other charges as the investigation continues into his escape, while also noting Striggow has now forfeited eligibility to work in any outdoor programs.

Authorities on Friday morning had deployed canine tracking teams, set up a perimeter around the jail and deployed searchers in the air after the man fled the job site around 9:30 a.m. Canine officers tracked him down around 12:30 p.m.
