A 9-year-old Rayne boy hospitalized since the weekend after falling from a moving truck died on Tuesday evening.
Authorities said Chance Leger was riding on top of an unsecured toybox placed on top of a Chevrolet Avalanche’s bed cover as his father drove down Standard mill Road on Saturday shortly before 5 p.m., according to a news release from the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office. The boy suffered a severe head injury when he and the toybox slid off the back of the truck.
After being air-lifted to a Lafayette hospital, he was eventually transferred to a Baton Rouge hospital, where he died, the Sheriff’s Office said.
His father, 36-year-old Brent Leger, of Church Point, was cited for having a person under age 12 in the bed of a truck while moving upon a highway.
Investigators expect to upgrade the counts now that the boy has died, the Sheriff’s Office said.
