The Lafayette Parish School System bus driver investigated for drunk driving following a crash with elementary-age children on board last week resigned from his job Monday.
John Harvey Bernard, 50, was suspended with pay Thursday pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident. His resignation was effective Monday, based on a listing of personnel changes the school board will review at its meeting Wednesday.
Bernard ran off the road and into a ditch around 7:15 a.m. March 12 while transporting 11 students to Katharine Drexel Elementary School.
Bernard initially told Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputies who responded to the scene of the crash at La Flamme and St. Nazaire roads in Broussard that he ran off the road to avoid an oncoming vehicle. However, investigators were able to determine that Bernard provided false information to deputies.
He was cited for careless operation of a vehicle and results of a blood sample he submitted to determine blood alcohol content are pending.
