An Opelousas man who served a 21-year prison sentence for a sex crime was booked this week on one count of attempted aggravated rape in a alleged sexual assault on a 10-year-old girl that occurred last week, police said.

Edward Broussard, 43, of 114 La. 178, is accused of trying to sexually assault the girl in the 1300 block of Ina Clare Drive.

Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow said the girl, who was pinned down, screamed and kicked her attacker in the groin and escaped in the short time he grimaced in pain. The girl told her mother, who called Opelousas police.

Gallow said Broussard is a tier 3 sex offender, which is the most serious level, and spent 21 years of a 30-year sentence in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

Broussard was released from Angola on Nov. 7, said Gallow, who was a sergeant in the 1990s and investigated the crime for which Broussard served the prison sentence.
