An Abbeville man and his nephew died Wednesday evening when their motorcycles collided with an 18-wheeler on La. 14 west of U.S. 90 in Iberia Parish, State Police said.

Jones Mitchell, 45, and Gerald Mitchell, 25, both of Abbeville, were riding Suzuki motorcycles westbound on La. 14 around 6 p.m. Wednesday when a Peterbilt 18-wheeler turned onto the highway, Trooper Melissa Matey with the Louisiana State Police said. The two motorcyclists collided with the truck, driven by 29-year-old Ernest Comesana Jr., of Crowley.

Jones and Gerald Mitchell were both wearing helmets at the time of the wreck but suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office, Matey said.

Comesana, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured in the wreck, Matey said. State Police do not suspect that alcohol played a role in the crash, Matey said. A breath test indicated Comesana was not impaired. Toxicological samples were taken from Jones and Gerald Mitchell for analysis.

Matey said the wreck remains under investigation and the Iberia Parish District Attorney’s Office is reviewing case for possible criminal charges.
