A Caroline Street resident fired a gun at two men caught overnight Friday attempting to burglarize his vehicle, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooter told deputies he thought the burglars were armed and he shot at one of them around 12:50 a.m., said Maj. Ryan Turner, Sheriff’s Office spokesman. Both men fled the area on foot.

Investigators believe the men were driving a stolen vehicle found at the scene, Turner said. They also believe the attempted burglary is linked to other reports of vehicle burglaries that happened the same night, Turner said.

Detectives are encouraging anyone with information on this or related incidents or the criminals’ identities to call the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s office at (337) 369-3711.
