A Crowley police officer involved in a shooting Tuesday night on West Seventh Street is one of two officers involved in a fatal shooting Aug. 11, KATC-TV reported.

The unnamed officer most recently fired shots at Crowley resident Jarai Andrus, 20, who was allegedly speeding toward the officer in an SUV after refusing to pull over for a traffic stop, Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson said Tuesday.

Andrus drove into a ditch after the shooting and will be arrested after he’s released from the hospital, Gibson said.

The same officer who shot at Andrus was also one of two involved in the Aug. 11 shooting of 53-year-old Melvin Leblanc, of Crowley, who was shot dead after allegedly firing toward officers responding to a disturbance call on Crawford Street.

Both officers were said to be placed on administrative leave after the August shooting, pending the outcome of a State Police investigation that’s still underway, according to KATC-TV.

Opelousas man accused of vote solicitations

An Opelousas man arrested on Election Day is accused of trying to solicit votes.

Wilfred Young, 64, was booked Tuesday into the St. Landry Parish Jail on voter bribery, said Sgt. Jody White, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

“He’s known to be active during voting times,” White said, including during the early voting period when police began receiving complaints. “This time, he approached several people, in which we had two of them come to the Police Department to let us know what he was doing.”

Police suspect Young was working from a list of candidates, but they will not release those names, White said, because the investigation into whether they were involved in the bribery remains underway.
