Katharine Drexel Elementary School could be making a move to a park-like setting about a mile from its current campus.
Arceneaux Park has been identified as a potential site for building the new school, according to both Broussard Mayor Charles Langlinais and Lafayette Parish School System Superintendent Donald Aguillard.
Langlinais said city officials have offered to assist the school system in identifying property and have been in discussions about the issue with incoming Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Joel Robideaux. While still early in the process, Aguillard said, the Lafayette Consolidated Government-owned park could be an ideal location for the school.
“It would involve quite a bit of discussion between Lafayette Consolidated Government, the new mayor-president of Lafayette and the city of Broussard to see if there’s some kind of intergovernmental agreement to allow that to take place. That’s still very preliminary,” Aguillard said.
Langlinais said the park is underused and a school there would be a welcome addition. The property is between U.S. 90 and East Main Street (La. 182) in Broussard.
If that site doesn’t work out, Langlinais said, the city has identified available property on Larriviere Road in Broussard where the school could be built.
“We’ve already committed all the water, sewerage and whatever they need for whatever school they need,” Langlinais said. “We’ve also committed to providing acreage on Larriviere Road to the School Board at no cost. We’re willing to put up the money and give them acreage.”
The School Board approved a $126 million bond sale to fund the construction of a new high school in Youngsville and to replace Drexel. The Drexel project is estimated at about $32 million.
Drexel enrolled about 680 students this fall and those numbers are expected to grow because of residential growth in the area and a rezoning approved in the summer that transferred about 200 students previously zoned for Youngsville schools to two other schools in Broussard — Drexel and Broussard Middle.
