Panelists will discuss proposed property taxes for the Lafayette Parish school system at a Monday forum organized by the Acadiana Press Club.

The panelists include Jeremy Hidalgo, Kathleen Espinoza and Carol Ross.

Hidalgo is the District 9 Lafayette Parish School Board member and serves as chairman of the board’s Facilities Committee. Espinoza is an executive board member with Power of Public Education Lafayette. Ross is a local businesswoman and tax opponent who also serves as a panelist for “Winging It Wednesday” on KPEL 96.5 FM.

Voters will decide in the April 9 election on the two School Board property tax propositions:

The first is an 11.5-mill tax expected to fund up to $380 million in school construction and other projects over a period of 30 years.

The second calls for a 4.5-mill, 10-year tax. Broken down, 2.5 mills would be designated to fund $5.2 million annually for a maintenance and school improvement fund. The remaining 2 mills would be dedicated to providing $4.2 million annually for initiatives such as school resource officers, early childhood education, career and technical education and technology upgrades.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Acadiana Press Club Vice President Ian Auzenne.

The public is invited to attend the noon forum at The Daily Advertiser community room, 1100 Bertrand Drive.

The Bus Stop food truck will be on-site for lunch.
