Willow Charter school slates open house

Willow Charter Academy opens its doors from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for a community open house at the school, 1818 Evangeline Thruway.

Families and community members can take a tour of the school, learn more about its “Moral Focus” curriculum and meet with school leaders. A free lunch will be served at 11 a.m.

The school begins classes for students in kindergarten through fifth grade on Aug. 12. Next year, it plans to add sixth grade and phase in grades seventh and eighth in subsequent years. It’s one of three charter schools opening in the parish next week. Willow Charter is managed by National Heritage Academies.

Summer graduation ceremony planned

About 160 University of Louisiana at Lafayette graduates will receive diplomas at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 in the Cajundome Convention Center during the university’s revival of its summer commencement ceremony.

It’s the university’s first summer commencement since 1949. The university began the summer ceremonies for the benefit of teachers who completed their bachelor’s degrees in education during the summer semester.

“Reintroduction of the ceremony gives graduating seniors and graduate students a chance to take part in the traditional exercise right away, rather than having to wait until the end of the fall semester,” said DeWayne Bowie, vice president for enrollment services.

About 1,500 students graduate from the university in the spring and fall.
