School superintendent to speak at Northside

Town-hall style meetings with Lafayette Parish School Superintendent Pat Cooper continue at 6 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria of Northside High School with a discussion on school facilities and technology.

The “Cafeteria Conversations” series is organized by the local parents’ group Parents Empowered as an opportunity for parents and the community to hear firsthand from Cooper about issues of concern to them.

After presentations, there is time for questions and answers.

The next and final meeting is at 6 p.m. May 6 at Carencro High and the discussion topic is budgeting for the 2014-15 school year.

Students to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday

The Environmental Sciences Academy at Lafayette Middle School will hold its Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the school’s grounds, 1301 W. University Ave.

The free, community event features nature crafts, environmental games, science demonstrations, music, food and other activities such as fun jumps, a rock wall and canoe rides in the school’s ponds.

The academy’s students have organized an Earth Day celebration since 2007 as a way to share their knowledge with the community, said Stacy Hargrove, academy director.

“Our students spend so much time learning about our connection to the environment and what we need to do to protect it,” she said.
