Lafayette Parish School Board members will wait to work out details of incoming Superintendent Donald Aguillard’s contract until the regularly scheduled meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Board President Tommy Angelle said he had hoped to work on the contract terms and approval of a contract for Aguillard in a special meeting this week, but not all board members were available Friday.

Angelle said May 18 remains the target start date for Aguillard, who has been superintendent in St. Mary Parish since 2004.

Angelle said he’s asked the board’s attorney to draft a contract the board can consider and amend, if it wishes, based on a meeting with Aguillard on salary range and other terms.

“We’ll let the board members look at it and see if we can come up with a consensus of opinion,” Angelle said.

Aguillard had planned to begin work in Lafayette, pending contract negotiations, on May 11, though St. Mary Parish School Board members asked him to stay there an additional week.

During his interview with the Lafayette board on April 22, Aguillard said he’d like to begin attending board meetings as soon as possible and also have input during budget meetings.

The board’s first budget meeting on the general fund with an estimated $16 million shortfall is May 12.
