All Lafayette Parish public schools will close on Thursday because of expected thunderstorms and possible flooding.
Schools are closing “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a news release from Mona Bernard, Lafayette Parish School System Risk Manager.
The district’s head custodians will check the facilities during the course of the day to assess conditions for re-opening schools on Friday, Bernard said. All adult education classes are also canceled.
A number of private schools have also announced closures. Read the full list at KATC-TV.
The National Weather Service on Wednesday issued a flash flood watch in effect through Thursday afternoon for the Acadiana area, including Lafayette, Iberia, St. Landry, Vermilion, St. Mary, upper and lower St. Martin and Avoyelles Parishes.
An estimated 4-5 inches of rain is expected to fall on Thursday in the Acadiana and Baton Rouge areas, with about 10 inches expected in the New Orleans area and the western portions of Louisiana.
The storms are the result of a slow-moving weather system moving through the state this week.
