Forum on school accountability grades
LAFAYETTE — PPEL: Power of Public Education will hold a free public forum on the Louisiana Department of Education’s school accountability system on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Clifton Chenier Auditorium, 220 W. Willow St.
The forum is designed to help the public understand how the state assigns letter grades to public schools.
“This is a public forum to dig into what it means for a school to ‘earn’ a letter grade. What is the purpose? What components make up the grade at each grade-level? Is it providing information that parents, teachers and administrators want and need to improve student learning in schools,” Ann Burrus, PPEL executive board member, said in a news release.
Forum panelists include: Tom Spencer, Lafayette Parish School System’s accountability director; Noel Hammatt, an education researcher and former East Baton Rouge Parish School Board member; Frank Del Favero, an education professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; and Ascension Parish Schools Superintendent Patrice Pujol, who is a member of the state’s Accountability Commission.
“We hope attendees will come away with their questions answered and with an awareness that grading schools is much bigger than K-12 public education,” Toby Daspit, PPEL president, said in a news release. “This is a community issue that requires all levels of government and all citizens working to address.”
