How they got here
SOUTHERN LAB: beat No. 12 St. Frederick 53-0 in first round, beat No. 13 Ascension Episcopal 44-19 in quarterfinal, beat No. 9 Madison Prep 26-12 in semifinal.
OUACHITA CHRISTIAN: beat No. 11 Covenant Christian 56-21 in first round, beat Central Catholic-Morgan City 38-0 in quarterfinal, beat St. Mary’s 38-12 in semifinal.
LAB: Four (last, 1996); OUACHITA CHRISTIAN: Five (last, 2012)
For the third straight season these two programs collide. Lab’s 20-14 road victory last season denied Ouachita Christian an opportunity at a potential state title three-peat.
SOUTHERN LAB: The Kittens are riding the crest of a seven-game win streak, relying on a balanced offense and big-play defense.
OUACHITA CHRISTIAN: While the Eagles, who have won five straight, have a variety of running backs, it’s clear they’ve made their living with quarterback Chance Clowers and receiver Jake Slaughter.
SOUTHERN LAB: RB Darbbeon Profit (213 carries, 1,744 yards, 15 TDs in his first season as a starter) has given Lab’s offense a different dimension and taken pressure off QB Bladrick Veal (125-for-220 for 1,857 yards and 20 TDs against only 3 interceptions), with Tevis Abraham (38-708, 10 TDs) serving as his top target. LBs Dorien Welch (169 tackles, 11 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries) and Catholic High transfer Javahn Ferguson (138 tackles, 41 TFLs, 8 sacks) lead the defense. … OCS: Clowers (156 of 266 for 2,366 yards with 29 TDs and 8 interceptions) is steady, and Slaughter is the team’s top rusher (74-553, 9 TDs) and receiver (63-1,086, 15 TDs). WR/DB Garryn Chowns has 44 catches for 660 yards and 5 TDs and with 10 (of the team’s 20) interceptions. LBs Bryan Reppond (150 tackles) and Grant Fitzhugh (145 tackles) power the defense.
This one has all the makings of a true classic with play-makers on both sides but look for a determined effort from Southern Lab to end its 18-year title drought. ... SOUTHERN LAB 26, OUACHITA CHRISTIAN 20
