SULPHUR — What a difference a year can make.
Just ask St. Thomas More swimmer Grace Horton.
“Last year, it was really tough to be able to compete against everyone,” she said. “And to be able to move up this year shows that the hard work paid off. I didn’t think I’d get the record. I found out about afterwards, and that was real exciting.”
Horton was voted Swimmer of the Meet for the girls in Division II to headline the list of Acadiana-area performers on the final day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA state swim meet Saturday.
Horton won the 100 freestyle in 53.04 seconds. She came back near the end of the meet and set a Division II record with a winning time of 57.17 in the 100 backstroke.
St. Thomas More was fifth in the Division II team competition with 180 points. St. Scholastica (girls) and Ruston (boys) won the team titles.
Lafayette High’s Jacob Bares and Ashlyn Hunt, were among the winners in the Division I competition that closed out the meet held at the SPAR Aquatic Center.
Bares is a senior set to swim at Utah next fall. He won the 100 breaststroke in 59.23 seconds and then went to help his team finish seventh in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.
“The time wasn’t exactly what I wanted in my event,” he said. “But I’m happy with the win. I knew I had to get back up and help lead my team with the relay. We’re trying to build a tradition in Lafayette. The goal is to get high school swimming on the level it is in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. This was just the start.”
St. Joseph’s Academy (girls) and Catholic High (boys) were the Division I champions. The Lafayette boys scored 139 points to finish fifth. The Lions were eighth in the girls standings with 83 points.
Hunt, a junior, won the 100 butterfly in 57.02 seconds. Hunt also was seventh in the 100 breaststroke. LHS’ Brandon Bouy finished second in the boys 100 butterfly.
Jackson Courville was the third-place finisher in the 100 breaststroke to pace the St. Thomas More boys in Division II.
“I got off to a rough start yesterday,” Hunt said Saturday. “Overall I’m pleased with today. Meets like this are fun.”
