CECILIA — The Teurlings Catholic volleyball team put the finishing touches on a perfect season in district play Tuesday night when it swept Cecilia in dominant fashion.
The Rebels (23-6, 8-0 Division III, District 4) never took its foot off the gas on its way to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-8) victory against the Bulldogs (19-15, 1-7) in the last district game of the season for both.
“We set some goals of what we wanted to accomplish in this match,” Teurlings Catholic coach Terry Hebert said. “We played really well over the weekend, and I was anxious to see how we would come into this match and finish district, and they picked up where they left off. I’m proud of them for doing that.”
Teurlings Catholic quickly took control of the first set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. But Cecilia capitalized on a few errors, scoring the next three points to get within a point.
That’s as close as the Bulldogs would get, as Teurlings reeled off nine of the next 10 points before coasting to a 25-14 victory.
The second match played out much like the first, with the Rebels scoring the first three points, and Cecilia quickly cutting their lead to 5-4. But again, the Rebels went on a big run, rattling off 10 points in a row to take a 15-4 lead and against cruising to a 25-10 victory.
Teurlings once again jumped out to a big lead in the third set, but this time it did not allow the Bulldogs to mount any kind of comeback.
Instead, it limited Cecilia to no more than two consecutive points and finished the match in appropriate fashion by scoring the final 10 points.
“They set their own personal goals (Tuesday night) of certain plays to run and things to do, and they accomplished those goals without our intervention,” Hebert said. “They set a goal for our last match of what they wanted to limit our opponent to, and they did just that. They kept their foot on the gas.”
With their regular season now at a close, the reigning Division III state champions now await the release of this year’s LHSAA state volleyball playoff bracket to see where they stand and who they will be pitted against.
