ALEXANDRIA — Jyron Walker and Joshua Matthews connected on a 46-yard Hail Mary pass on the game’s final play to help Dunham earn a 27-24 win over Menard in the Division III select playoffs Friday night.
“I saw the ball go up. They tipped it up in the air and I took it off of one of the defensive player’s hands,” Matthews said.
Dunham (7-4) rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to earn the win. Walker completed 16 of 31 passes for 174 yard and rushed for 56 yards. Chase Day ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers.
Austin Vaughan ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns for Menard (6-5).
JESUIT 42, ST. AUGUSTINE 14: Jesuit left little in doubt during its first-round Division I playoff win at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Sixth-seeded Jesuit (9-2) and advances to play St. Thomas More next week.
Grinding out yardage behind its offensive line anchored with four seniors, the Blue Jays jumped to a 21-0 lead by halftime and coasted from there. Jesuit gained 287 yards rushing on 47 carries against the Knights (4-6).
BROTHER MARTIN 63, SHAW 21: Three weeks after Brother Martin beat Shaw in a game that went down to the end, the Crusaders delivered an early knockout in the rematch.
Brother Martin, led by Jake Broggi’s arm and Jared West’s legs, put together a near flawless performance to rout its Catholic League rival in the opening round of the Division I playoffs.
It was the most points Brother Martin had scored since a 59-point outing against Ruston way back in 1989. That game took three overtimes.
PARKVIEW BAPTIST 34, LUSHER 7: The Eagles ran away with a victory to open the Division II football playoffs.
In addition to outscoring the 10th-seeded Lions 21-0 in the second half, the seventh-seeded Eagles (7-3) held New Orleans-based Lusher to 74 yards and three first downs.
Nelson Smith helped lead a Parkview squad that rolled up 297 rushing yards. The junior had 80 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns.
SOUTHERN LAB 53, ST. FREDERICK 0: Darbbeon Profit ran for 219 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdown and 2-point conversion as Southern Lab (6-5) advanced to the second round. Javahn Ferguson had a 41-yard touchdown run and Bladrick Veal hit Derrick Pate with a scoring pass as the Kittens put the game away early.
The Lab defense was dominant throughout the game holding St. Frederick (7-4) to 136 yards and picked off three passes with Trey Epps making two of the interceptions. Eighteen of the Lab tackles went for minus yards
VERMILION CATHOLIC 54, HOUMA CHRISTIAN 21: Hunter Frith threw for 310 yards and six touchdowns as top-seeded Vermilion Catholic cruised to a first round win in Division IV.
Tyler Derouen and Emile Trahan each caught a pair of scoring passes as Vermilion Catholic (10-1) scored all 54 points in the first three quarters.
Derouen also ran for a 20-yard TD and Chris Campbell scored on a 2-yard run as Vermilion Catholic amassed 461 yards in offense.
Drake Battaglia ran for a 12-yard score, threw a 7-yard scoring pass to John Broussard and a 6-yard TD pass to Devin Battaglia for Houma Christian, which ended the season with a 6-5 record.
