MONROE — St. Thomas More senior Carla Ortega now has a state singles title to go with her state doubles title from 2014.
Ortega lost the first set in the finals, but rallied in the next two sets to win the LHSAA State Tennis Tournament Division II girls singles title Friday.
STM scored nine points to finish second in the Division II girls team race behind St. Michael the Archangel (13 points). Neville (9 points) was third.
“Carla Ortega had a great tournament and a great career here,” STM coach Chad Hebert said. “She’s done a whole lot for STM in her two years here. It was a very close match in the finals with momentum changes. Carla was the more aggressive player.”
Ortega defeated St. Michael freshman Whitney Hamilton 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. She beat Neville’s Layne Fincher 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals.
“I’m really happy that I won,” said Ortega, who will continue her career at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “I was a little down after losing the first set, but my coach and my teammates helped me come back. I really wanted this as a senior.”
Ortega teamed with Caroline Myers to win the Division II doubles title last season. Myers and Madeline Haydel advanced to the semifinals, but lost to St. Michael’s top-seeded and eventual championship team of Laken Mariouneaux and Shelby Broussard 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“My aggressive game let me get some points,” Ortega said. “My forehand is one of my strengths. Winning doubles last year was fun, too. Finishing as state runner-up was great.”
STM was the 2014 girls state champion.
St. Michael and Vandebilt Catholic tied for the Division II boys team title. The STM boys finished fourth.
Jesuit won the Division I boys title with 16 points. Catholic High was second with 11.
Dominican won the Division II girls title with 16 points and Mt. Carmel was second with 14.
