The Louisiana High School Athletic Association released the pairings for the state boys basketball tournament on Monday, and three Lafayette-area teams face tough first-round matchups.
No. 20 WARREN EASTON @ No. 13 ST. THOMAS MORE
The Cougars closed the season strong, winning eight of their final nine games before falling in a playoff game to St. Martinville for the district championship. Their only other loss in that stretch? Another game to St. Martinville. But the Cougars will have their hands full with Warren Easton’s stud guard Kevin Hicks, who can light up a scoreboard with the best of them.
No. 19 FRANKLIN PARISH @ No. 14 TEURLINGS CATHOLIC
Teurlings has one of, if not the best big man in the area in 6-foot-7 junior Cole Kelley. Not only do the Rebels rely on him to be a dominant post presence, but they also use him on the perimeter where he has surprised some teams with his shooting touch. A win would be a big step for the Teurlings program, which hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2004-05 season – way back when Kelley was in second grade.
No. 21 ELTON @ No. 12 ASCENSION EPISCOPAL
The Blue Gators proved themselves against everybody not named Lafayette Christian or Central Catholic, going 8-2 in their final 10 games with its their only two losses coming to the aforementioned teams. Can they keep that hot streak going into the playoffs? They’ll get a test early against an Elton squad that went 11-3 in district play.
