Central Catholic baseball team, Catholic-Point Coupee softball team garner major Class 1A all-state honors _lowres

The teams couldn’t have been more different, but the final result was the same for Class 1A Central Catholic of Morgan City and Catholic-Pointe Coupee.

A senior-laden Central Catholic baseball team and a revamped Catholic-PC softball team won state titles and claimed three of the top honors on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A all-state teams.

Central Catholic shortstop Samuel Guarisco was voted the Outstanding Player, while Tyler Jensen CCMC grabbed Coach of the Year honors to help lead the LSWA baseball squad picked by a panel of sportswriters from across the state.

Lauren Doucet, who coached eighth-seeded Catholic-PC to a state title, was selected as the softball Coach of the Year. Pitcher Julia Beck of semifinalist Ascension Catholic was voted the Outstanding Player on the softball team.

Central Catholic won two one-run games at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State Baseball tournament to claim its first state title in baseball since 2005. The top-seeded Eagles finished 28-4.

Guarisco batted .403 with 10 doubles and 31 RBIs. He also was voted the title game MVP. Jensen coached the Eagles to their first state title since 2005.

CHSPC entered the softball playoffs with a deceptive 12-11 record and a lineup that included seven first-year starters. The Hornets outscored their opponents 36-7 in the playoffs and won their first state title since 2013.

Beck, who went 20-4, struck out 220 and had a 2.20 earned run average. The senior also batted .493 with 20 RBIs.

Pitcher Gregory Leger (6-3, 1.89 ERA) and infielder Mitchel Lemoine (.430, 31 RBIs) are other Central Catholic players on the 1A baseball squad. Outfielder Rae’Shaun Malancon (.507, 32 RBIs) is the other Ascension Catholic player on the softball team.

Catholic-PC placed pitcher Ryann Bizette (17-11, 1.69 ERA) and utility selection Katelyn Bellelo (.450, 29 RBIs) on the softball squad.

Hanson Memorial, Vermilion Catholic and Ascension Catholic each placed two players on the LSWA baseball squad. St. Mary’s and Cedar Creek placed three players each on the softball squad. Oak Grove had two players softball team.
