CARENCRO — Carencro High School quarterback Gabe Duffy was nearly unstoppable in Friday’s Class 4A opening-round playoff game as he and the Golden Bears defense dominated Woodlawn 38-20.
Duffy was 3 of 9 passing for 144 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 151 yards and three more scores. His defense chipped in with three interceptions.
The game began in stellar fashion for the Golden Bears as linebacker Rashad Harding intercepted Woodlawn quarterback Jamari Nelson’s pass on the first play of the game at the Woodlawn 29-yard line.
Carencro turned the opportunity into quick points as Campbell plunged into the end zone from 10 yards out for an early 7-0 lead.
On the first play of the second quarter, the Bears faced a third-and-4 from their own 18. Duffy dropped back and hit receiver Trevor George for an 82-yards touchdown and a 14-0 advantage.
But Carencro’s next drive stalled and it was forced to punt from its own 34. The deep snap went over Duffy’s head, and though he managed to get the punt off, it landed just short of the original line of scrimmage.
Woodlawn’s drive started at the Carencro 29 and nearly stalled before a pass interference call in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the 3 gave the Panthers new life. On the first play following the penalty, Taj Sullivan plowed up the middle to cut the lead to 14-7.
After another Carencro punt, Nelson completed passes to Vessel Quincy on back-to-back plays — the first for 24 yards — the second for 9 yards down to the 1. On the next play, Javin Myers tied the game on a 1-yard run with 1:19 remaining in the first half.
It appeared the Bears would run out the clock and go into the locker room with the game tied. But Duffy busted a 29-yard run and got out of bounds near midfield. After a couple incomplete passes, Duffy took the snap out of the shotgun, ran up the middle and scored on 56-yard touchdown run which gave the Bears a 20-14 lead at the half.
Duffy didn’t cool off in the locker room, either. On the opening drive of the third quarter, he passed for 42 yards and rushed for 41, including an 8-yard touchdown scamper. The Bears converted the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 28-14.
After a 29-yard field goal by Logan Boudreaux put Carencro up 31-14, the game began to spiral out of hand when Nelson threw his third interception of the night and the Bears cashed in with a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Treylon Barnaba.
As Duffy drove inside the Woodlawn 1 in an attempt to tack on yet another score, he fumbled and Woodlawn’s Xavier Lodge recovered the ball and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to cut the Carencro lead to 38-20.
Woodlawn recovered the onside kick at midfield, but their drive was stifled and the Bears took over on downs.
