Sonny Charpentier’s witnessed plenty of change in the growth of Teurlings Catholic as a school and football program.

Before taking over the football program 21 years ago, Charpentier was the offensive coordinator during the Rebels’ heyday with future NFL quarterback Jake Delhomme.

Those peaks in the program took place in Class 1A, but fast-forward today, and Teurlings is a season removed from a 9-2 season that included a District 5-4A championship and Division I state quarterfinal appearance against Archbishop Rummel.

With an almost evenly divided number of starters back on offense and defense, Teurlings (2-0) is once again well regarded with a No. 2 ranking in Class 4A and 2-0 start following Saturday’s 37-23 victory at Archbishop Shaw.

“If someone would have told me 20-something years ago we could have loaded the bus to go to New Orleans and played a team from the Catholic League with a chance to win, I would have told them they’re crazy,” said Charpentier, now 181-55 in his career. “Things change; things evolve over time. It’s a good win for us, but time will tell what it does for us.”

Teurlings opened at No. 2 in the Louisiana Sportswriters Association’s Class 4A rankings and remained that way again Tuesday, followed by District 4-4A rival No. 3 St. Thomas More (2-0), No. 6 Crowley (2-0) and No. 9 Carencro (2-0).

The stay at No. 1 in the Class 5A poll is over for Acadiana (1-1), after its 26-0 loss at Ponchatoula. That sent the Rams tumbling to No. 10, while the Green Wave (2-0) debuted at No. 6.

District 7-1A continued its strong presence in Class 1A with No. 4 Vermilion Catholic (1-1), No. 5 Ascension Episcopal (2-0) and No. 7 Central Catholic-Morgan City (2-0).

Kaplan (2-0) and Church Point (2-0), which meet in Kaplan on Friday, received the highest number of votes involving area teams in Class 3A, followed by Eunice (2-0) and Patterson (0-2).

Teurlings’ ranking has already withstood a pair of tests with wins over two-time defending Division III state champion Calvary Baptist 45-28 before taking down Shaw, the second Catholic League opponent the Rebels have defeated in two years.

Quarterback Cole Kelley passed for 245 yards and a pair of TDs, while running back Noah Harris rushed for 102 yards and three TDs and added another receiving TD.

Teurlings trailed early following a fumble on the opening kickoff but rallied to lead 23-17 at halftime and stretched that margin to 37-17 with a pair of TDs.

However, with a road date Friday at 7 p.m. against Class 2A’s No. 5 Notre Dame of Crowley (2-0), Teurlings realizes its status among the state’s top 4A programs will be tested again.

“We’ve got our stiffest challenge coming this week,” Charpentier said. “They’re a typical Notre Dame team that’s well coached, plays hard and doesn’t beat themselves. It will be our biggest challenge this year.”
