Riverside Academy’s Mason Vicknair and Menard’s Jensen Howell headline the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 2A All-State baseball and softball teams.

Vicknair, who finished 8-3 on the mound with 84 strikeouts, was voted the Outstanding Player on the baseball squad and shares the spotlight with another Menard pitcher Jensen Howell.

Howell, voted the Outstanding Player for softball, was 21-3 in the circle with 240 strikeouts in 154 innings for 2A runner-up Menard.

In addition to his pitching numbers, Vicknair batted .360 while leading Riverside Academey to the semifinals.

Two coaches who led their teams to state titles, Calvary Baptist’s Tiffany Frazier and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Barrett Morgan, claimed the Coach of the Year honors on the teams selected by a panel of sportswriters from across the state.

Morgan’s Falcons defeated Opelousas Catholic and St. Charles at the LHSAA state tourney to win their first title in baseball, capping a 32-3 campaign.

St. Thomas Aquinas placed four players on the baseball team: pitcher Alex Egan (11-1, 1.24 ERA), catcher Ryan Amerson (.389, 30 RBIs), outfielder Reed Bolton (.421, 37 runs scored) and Hunter Stanley (.402, 29 RBIs).

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Karlee Kraft (.505, nine home runs, 46 RBIs) also made the softball team.

Episcopal’s Chris Thibodaux (10-2, 0.71 ERA) made the team as a utility player.

The Acadiana area contingent included Notre Dame’s Joe Faulk (8-3, 2.11 earned run average) who made the team as a utility player. Opelousas Catholic’s Spencer Gardner (.404, 6 home runs, 33 RBIs) was selected as an infielder.

Two Notre Dame softball players, pitcher Marcella Gossen (19-6, 2.51 ERA) and utility choice Mima Doucet (.443, nine doubles, 22 RBIs), also are part of the LSWA 2A teams.
