MONROE — Top-seeded Carla Ortega advanced into the semifinals of girls singles to put St. Thomas More into contention for its second straight LHSAA Division II state tennis title Thursday.

Ortego, who had a first-round bye, defeated Alexandria’s Lauren Fuller 6-0, 6-1 and Ben Franklin’s Gianna St. Julien 6-1, 6-2.

Also advancing to the semifinals were the STM doubles team of Caroline Meyers and Madeline Haydel. The duo defeated Morgan City’s Pitre and Hoggart 6-0, 6-0, Assumption’s Landry and Boudreaux 6-3, 6-3, and West Ouachita’s Johnson and Pate 6-2, 6-3.

Sarah Maraist and Caroline Cryer also earned a point for STM with a doubles win over Caddo Magnet’s Anderson and McGuire 6-4, 7-6. St. Scholastica’s Grayson and Strawn defeated the duo 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.

STM’s two boys doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals before losing. STM’s top-seeded team of Max Perret and Patrick Stegall defeated Caddo Magnet’s Bae and Khanna 6-0, 6-1 and St. Michael’s Cane and Shortess 6-2, 6-2 before losing to Ruston’s Ellis and Drewett 6-4, 6-1. STM’s Ian Naquin and Patrick Fenstermaker defeated Ruston’s Shively and Borden 6-3, 6-2 and Franklin Parish’s Wilson and Troha 6-0, 6-1 before losing to Caddo Magnet’s Guerrin and Koul 7-5, 6-3.

STM singles players Daniella Ortega (girls) and Will Zieglar and Michael Taylor (boys) lost first-round matches.
