LAFAYETTE — Cecilia’s Bulldogs showed Friday night that they are more than Raymond Calais.
The Bulldogs got three touchdown passes from Landon Roberts and had a stifling defensive performance for the second straight week, rolling to a 33-6 victory over host Northside and giving Cecilia its first 2-0 start since the 2009 season.
Roberts threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first 15 minutes to give the Bulldogs an early lead, then added a 37-yard strike to Rusty Robin early in the third period that gave Cecilia all the scoring it needed.
Calais, who had run for 228 yards and three scores in the season-opening 28-0 win over Comeaux, finished with 129 yards and a pair of scores before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter.
“(Calais) has great speed; he’s always had that,” Bulldogs coach Terry Martin said, “but at times tonight he showed he can be a little physical. I’m really proud of the way our offensive line performed both in giving Landon time to throw and giving our running backs some room.”
Just as impressive was the Cecilia defense, which held Northside to 49 rushing yards as a team and sacked the Vikings’ Markaylon Boyd seven times. In all, the Vikings offense had only nine first downs and turned the ball over twice.
“Our defense did a great job for the second straight week,” Martin said. “Any time you win, it’s a great thing, but I thought our defense did an awful lot of good things.”
Cecilia, a former districtmate of the Vikings’ before this year’s realignment, drove to a touchdown on its first possession, with Roberts guiding a 10-play, 68-yard drive and capping it with a 16-yard strike to Robin with 6:53 left in the first.
Northside (0-2) only hit the scoreboard once, that coming on the Vikings’ second possession when Boyd hooked up with a sprinting Lenox Pierre over the middle for a 54-yard strike to the Cecilia 3. Raleigh Robinson went across from 3 yards on the next play, the third of the second quarter.
That brought the Vikings within 7-6 after a missed extra point, and Northside drove into Cecilia territory on four of its next six possessions before drives stalled. The Vikings only had two turnovers, one fumble and one interception, but they hurt themselves with 10 penalties, and Cecilia sophomore Ryan Malbrough had three of his team’s seven sacks.
Only five plays after Robinson’s score, the Bulldogs increased the lead to 14-6 on three Calais runs that totaled 26 yards and a 39-yard alley-oop touchdown pass to Kenya Dartez with 9:06 left before halftime.
After forcing a punt, the Bulldogs drove 47 yards, and Calais covered the final 4 for his first touchdown and a 21-6 halftime lead.
Boyd was hit and fumbled on the fourth play of the second half to give Cecilia possession at its 37; a Calais run and a personal foul penalty set up Robin’s second touchdown that was the backbreaker for the host Vikings.
Boyd was intercepted on the next drive, but it still took Cecilia only five plays to get its last score on Calais’ 14-yard run.
For the night, Roberts hit on 6 of 11 passes for 178 yards, and Dartez and Robin each had three catches. Robinson had 81 rushing yards, and Boyd threw for 159 yards, hitting five of his first six passes before the Bulldogs defense stiffened and only allowed one completion in his last 11 attempts.
