LAFAYETTE — The undeniable desire for every softball coach is for the team to get the timely hit.

Thursday’s game between St. Thomas More and Teurlings saw both sides of that coin in glaring fashion.

The Rebels had bases loaded with no outs in the fifth and bases loaded with one out in the sixth but couldn’t get the timely hit.

The Cougars, however, did get the timely hit — a two-out double in the sixth inning from Whitney Romero — to give STM the 2-1 win.

“I can’t be happier for (Romero) — and on senior day against a big rival,” STM coach Andria Waguespack said. “She has been working on some things in the cage, and that couldn’t have come at a bigger moment. That was awesome.”

Not only did Romero strike with the timely hit, but she allowed just one run on three hits while striking out eight in seven innings in the circle.

“That is having a state championship pitcher making the right pitches when she needed and our defense backing her up,” Waguespack said. “She made some great pitches and popped them up a couple times. She located her pitches well today. That is what it takes.”

Teurlings’ inability to get runs across in two critical bases-loaded situations left Rebels coach Lauren Delahoussaye dejected after the game with few words to share.

“We just didn’t get it (the timely hit),” she said. “That’s all there is to it. There is nothing left to say. I think it’s (a lack of) experience and maturity and someone who can handle the pressure.”

Waguespack said getting out of those jams in back-to-back innings was a stressful situation, but getting out unscathed will be something to build on as the season goes on.

“Anytime you get bases loaded nobody out with nobody scoring, it fires you up,” she said. “The pitcher starts throwing well, you make a play here or there, and that is what you’ve got to do.

“We’ve had issues with coming up in big spots (this season),” she said. “It was big that we put everything together. We’ve been hitting the ball hard, just right at people. It’s going to start falling for us, but our defense today stepped up. We’ve been needed to get better all around, and I was happy to see that today. I’m happy we got the win, but I was happier to see us come together. We need that more at this point in the season.”
